Bands that I now turn up every time they come up on the Party Shuffle but before this year I didn't even know existed (or only vaguely knew about) and also particularly good songs by them
Mindless Self-Indulgence

Pain
 Elanor Rigby Cover is awesome
 Save Me
Fade Away

Porcupine Tree

Fear Factory

Opeth

Babylon Whores
(not only are their songs good, their name is incredibly amusing to me.)
Hell Abloom

(I can't remember if I started listening to them last year but:)

FALCONER

Manowar

Bands that I like, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about overall ("It's not you, it's me, I think we should take a break" ... haha)

Clutch (I don't know yet. It's all a bit blokey for me or something.)

KMFDM
(One or two great songs, other... average ones?)

Bands that I knew about, but have greatly disappointed me. BITTERLY, even. In fact the more forms of text enhancement, the more bitter the disapointment.

Pantera (just seem to suck, I don't know. I'm not disappointed because their name's not that cool)

Mastodon
(so disappointed. So many good song/album titles involving megafauna and other awesomage, awesome name, disappointing songs.)

Nine Inch Nails
(I expected... something earth moving?)

MUSE : THE SINGER'S REALLY LOUD GASPY INHALATION IS THE MOST IRRITATING THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. ALL THE MORE ANNOYING BECAUSE WITHOUT IT THEY WOULD BE FANTASTIC.

Tool (Okay so I haven't listened much yet, but it wasn't what I expected. And this isn't.. hm. Maybe consider this one to be more of a general "confusion" rather than "disappointment")

Bands I had heard about but never listened to but now listen to and enjoy

Motley Crue

Monster Magnet
King of Mars

Queens of the Stone Age

Faith No More

Jane's Addiction

Current List of Favourite Bands (For interest's sake?)

silverchair
Rage Against the Machine
Led Zeppelin (oh how could I forget you, I am so sorry)
Falconer
Magic Dirt
System of a Down
The Smashing Pumpkins

I have a conundrum to put forth to you, dear LJ.
You see, every day around midafternoon (which for me, by the way, is about 4 o'clock, because... well there's a whole lot of PM in a day you know.)  I have my 4-5pm break (okay, so it's exactly 4 o'clock but whatev). Now, this is because by 4pm my brain is fried and I couldn't give an arse rats (whether I lives or dies) about Architecture any more, so I do something like take the dog for a walk or pwn some monsters. BUT this does not cure the slump in productivity! So is it worth taking a dangerous 2 hour break? Maybe a bit later in the day, like 6t-8 (because it's much more pleasant working when it's light?). It's not worth breaking up the break into little bits, because that actually just feels like no break at all and I don't actually manage to peel my brain away from architecture.

(Btw this is the first Mastodon song I've liked - and it's an instrumental)

Also can someone prrrrzzzz send me some Nightwish when they had that female singer that everyone raves about, because I would like to see if she could be added to my list of "the only two women ever to be able to do rock without making it too soft." (In my experience, girls just don't like yelling enough. If I could sing better, (or if I could play guitar better, or both) I promise I would be a proper rock chick and yell more. BUT ALAS I HAVE NO TIME FOR REALISING MY MUSICAL HERITAGE, OH THE TRAVESTY

MUST START EAST ELEVATION NOW, NO MORE TIME FOR TALK

I totally agree about muse...except the part where you said they could be good. They're on my list of bands I can't stand. But I will admit three bands have recently moved from my 'can't stand' list to my 'listen to sometimes' list. But Muse won't. Ever. Ever!

Hm, fair enough. I haven't really paid enough attention to their lyrics/musical qualities to make a truely true assessment of them, I just can't get past that gasping. GOD. If other singers can sing their wittwe hearts out and not gasp like someone with a hole in their lung, why can't he?
But I assume they would be okay... Brain.

Haha! I have had a few transitions like that. It's kind of funny. You have to keep it very hush-hush.

How is Japan? (not that I should be starting an LJ comment conversation, I should be starting another Elevation. I am very wicked. You should reply though, and then I will reply again later.. Yes.)

Oh Japan has caused me a lot of pain. I will blog about it later today because right now I should be getting ready for work instead of half watching highlights of the leader's debate last night (I gave up because my opinion is already formed)

I could make a list of bands I can't stand, but I know you like a few of them. Actually....your two favourite bands are on my list of bands I've always felt are kind of overrated, bands I'm kind of indifferent to. One of them I actively dislike.
Actually, looking back at your list, the band I actively dislike isn't there...maybe it was a passing phase? Also Led Zep isn't there

P.S Tell me which one the band you actively dislike but isn't on the list is? I have a few bands which I can think of that it might have been. (And yes most of them = passing phase, hehe)

Ah, okay. Hm. They only really have one album, and I preferred the LP (EP? I don't remember) versions of all of the songs that they included from that, so.. I like them, but I wouldn't say they are one of my "favouritez evah"
That list is kind of a "I would pay lots of dollars to see them live" or "I would fangirl if I met them" list, and Wolfmother doesn't currently qualify. If they had a concert I'd probably go, provided the ticket was less than say, $40.

More zen?

it must be my close proximity to so many buddhist temples, and so few people getting visibly angry

And perhaps also my distance from Wolfmother. Although my favourite junior high student, who I had a big conversation about music with (and made a mix cd for. I love influencing people's musical tastes) said she liked wolfmother. But she's fifteen...and Japanese. Both are pretty good excuses for not knowing better

I'll bite.

Muse: I honestly have never noticed it. On a 2 random song picks ('Invincible' from 'Black Holes and Revelations' and 'Bliss' from 'Origin of Symmetry') I can hear what you are talking about, but it doesn't really annoy me. This was a band that really grew on me after I realised that the other albums are quite different to 'Absolution' (which is still not a favourite, but has also grown on me a bit).

Tool: What song/s or album/s did you listen to? What were you expecting? Being a bit confused is part of the point of Tool, IMHO. There are also different distinct 'eras' of style in Tool; it's worth noting that there were several years between the release of the albums. 'Lateralus' and '10,000 Days' (and to a lesser extent 'Aenima') are very different to 'Undertow' and 'Opiate', so this may be why you didn't get what you were expecting.

Queens of the Stone Age: Josh Homme is the only popular artist that I know of that uses a type of electric guitar that I really want (a Maton Mastersound). This is about all that I know about this band.

Jane's Addiction: Tell me about them, in general.

Hm. Since I normally only ever hear them in a random playlist, I can't really satisfactorily say what I think of their albums, just for some reason I can't get over this guy's breathing. Maybe I should listen more, and then perhaps it will annoy me less. Or someting.

Hm. I apparently have Anemia and Lateralus on my *ahem* off-site backup copy archive, it's not that I was particuarly disli.. wait, was particuarly disliked? Hm I speak de Englush gut. It's not that I dislike it or anything, it's just that the song I heard was very... Well it was kind of like Fear Factory which is (according to iTunes) Industrial Metal with screaming and stuff. I was kind of expecting something unlike anything I have heard before. I will listen to... Lateralus right now and then report on what I thought. Because they are pretty significant... Too significant, perhaps, to simply dismiss due to random playlists.

I'm unclear on the popularity of Queens of the Stone Age. The songs I have are not what you would hear on say, Nova. Maybe I have old songs (like I said.. off site backup copy... haha) They range from funky kind of rock to fairly heavy stuff.

Jane's Addiction's singer has a rather pretty voice. Their lyrics are kind of... Bardic, though that's the wrong word... oh yes. Ballad-like. Or at least Everybody's Friend is, they actually have quite a range of different songs. Most of their stuff is pretty up-beat in a (relatively) mellow sort of way.

I did realise today that I have noticed the loud breathing on one track, the cover of 'Feeling Good' (I just mistyped that as 'Feeling Food'); I actually thought it was quite appropriate to the song.

Just thought of what I was expecting from Tool. More "Zen." As in... more musical than lyrical (which I suppose so far (I'm one track in to Lateralus now), but then expecting the vocals to be more melodic, in a gentle way. So basically I had made up my own idea completely without ever having heard anything by them. That was probably my problem. Haha.

Lateralus is the 'zen' album, which in my opinion fulfills everything that you expected (except 'Ticks and Leeches', that song doesn't really fit with the rest of the album). This is especially so on the last 3 songs 'Disposition', 'Reflection' and 'Triad' (which are really one three-part song). The earlier stuff ('Opiate', 'Undertow' and to some extent (okay a reasonable extent) 'Aenima') is a lot more angry. I think 'Lateralus' is the best album and it is the one I would recommend to someone who wants to hear the 'Tool sound'. I would recommend earlier albums to a metalhead.

This just in

I really liked Lateralus. So yes, I agree with your opinion. I have to listen to it again though, before I will start to know the songs.

! That's a good explanation actually. The songs I heard (must have been from another album) which caused "?" were more metalhead, yes. Huzah for understanding. :)

I only listen to about 4 songs on Absolution. It doesn't even have a strong ending song like the other albums. =/ Have you heard Hullaballoo?

shut the fuck up Matt Bellamy is a GODDAMN GENIUS he is the most creative man IN THE ENTIRE MUSIC BIZ if you DON'T UNDERSTAND his AWESOMENESS then you have TERRIBLE TASTE!!!!!! (if you're ever bored and Dr.Tom's around, start going on about how Interpol or Radiohead have completely ripped off Muse's sound.)

I actually find his inhalation kinda cute!
