Tell me: is Troy based upon that horrid "novel" written by that teenage girl?

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Err, Troy is based on the mythical story of the fall of the city of Troy...
Trojan Horse and the rest, you know.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I should hope to be quite aware of that, since I am currently studying Greek Verse Literature. I meant to ask whether it was directly based on that tale, or whether it was based upon something based upon it.

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... sorry.
I dont know what it is based on, It has most of the elements of the standard Troy story, Plus a few odd features, such as Archilles.
Unless he is in the tale normally?

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
No problem. Well, I don't know. There is a Hero by the name of Achilles in the normal tale, with a pretty important part. Tell me: is there a heroine by the name of Xanthe or Cassandra? Which side of the field are you getting the story from?

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I saw the movie the other day.
I think I need to go back to the old Greek mythology.
There is no heroine, apart from Helen, who isnt really a heroine...
Was Archilles instumental in the battle? Cos he was in the movie, tho they didnt go into his heel thing.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
He was pretty immensely instrumental in the battle, since he was the best Greek hero by far - son, if I recall, of Zeus and a nymph. Okay, I see. Maybe my suspicions were unfounded, then. I would have liked a closer examination of Cassandra, daughter (#4/50, was it?) of Priam.

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
They didnt mention Archilles' parents more than in passing unfortunately, I would have liked to see their take on it. It is mentioned that his mother was a goddess (possibly), and that his father is dead, but all in passing.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Very strange indeed, since in the original tale Thetis, the river nymph and his mother, actually intercedes before the gods a couple of times in his behalf.

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
That would have been an interesting addition to the movie.
I can see I'll have to dig out some old books on Greek Mythology.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Would you like copies of The Iliad and The Odyssey? I think I have copies right here...

[identity profile] ummyep.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm, sure. However, arnt you in the UK?

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Look here:

I do live in the UK, so you will want to change the download site. Enjoy.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
No problem. That site has a very good number of books whose copyright has expired. Try, for instance, Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit, or Jane Austen's Persuasion.

*realises that commenting at the end of a thread may be slightly inethical..*
Heheh. For some reason, I find the idea of copyright expiration hugely amusing. The year copyright expires on a piece of [decent] literature comes around, and people fall on it like a pack of rabid dogs... muahahahah....

eheh.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-18 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Unethical, dear.

Do explain the amusement further, won't you?

[identity profile] bloodied-aura.livejournal.com 2004-05-22 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks.

Oh, I don't know. I just have this image of people with nothing to do sitting, waiting for copyright to expire... amusing.

[identity profile] volandum.livejournal.com 2004-05-22 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think I understand now...

:) good good
