Here am I, doing Geography assignment.
You know what's kinda sad?
You see, I origionally thought that the official Solomon Islands website was just shite. But then I looked at the dates of creation and last update.
Creation: June 16, 1996
Last update: August 11, 1996
So that explains it. Pretty good for a 1996 site. Sad that the country seems to have ground to a complete standstill.

Communial, familial and clan ties remain very strong in Solomon Islands. Most people consider themselves to be part of an immediate family of 200 and can trace back their ancestors at least ten generations.

My God. that's crazy. 200 people in the immediate family.
"Hi, this is mum, dad, joe, betty, ana, jack, (74 people later) tree, rock, flower, dog, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98,99 (90 people later) dash dash vee i i i, ecs, x, Z zed..."

Not long to go now :)

EARTHBEAT INTERVEIW - Alexandra de Blas and Ron May

The Solomon Islands is a very poor, small system of Islands
Civil War
To the north of Australia.
Was teh location of some of the most bitter fighting of WWII. Ethnic tension.
Disputes = land and resources, environmental problems.
Main revenue : logging and fisheries
tensions largely called by communication problems and pigheadedness

Resources are being exploited, so governments won't have financial ability to provide services.
Villigers see ministers growing rich on their hard work and them not getting anything from it.

SERI HEATE

Alot of the Solomons is marine or coasts, diverse mangroves, lagoons, coral reefs etc.
V high in biodiversity.
Climate change (rising sea levels etc) affects the environment.

population increase is an issue
major impacts on environ.
large-scale exportation of natural resources.
85% of area is customary owned - in the hands of the local people

Population expected to double in the next 25 years. This causes a need for planning on the people's part. Expansion of garden areas, a lot of space needs to be cleared.
Over exploitation of land and marine resources. Mining, logging etc is also an issue.

CONCERN: in next 10 or so years there will be NO MORE FOREST.

Tribes used to live inland. but with introduction of Christianity they moved to the coast and thus the pressure on fisheries became an issue. Turtles, trochus, beche de mer, pearl unsustainably hunted.
Mangroves harvested. No replanting. Fish breed in mangroves. Finfish stocks - live fish trade. Spawning stocks are targeted and this causes major problems as per sustainability.

Dolphins exploited by being exported.

Climate change v. extreme.

20% of corals have been bleached.

500 000 cubic mtrs of timber being harvested each yr, most of it illegally. 5 yrs on continued viable logging.

Foreign logging companies exploiting land and corrupting government.

Logging destroys not only flora & fauna, but removes things needed for hunting, medicine, spiritual reasons and things like that.
People build their homes from trees that grow in the forest. The people find it hard to live after logging.

the community can now have control over the forest, manage it themselves, harvest single trees with portable milling equipment. They don't need roads, and carry the wood on their backs, and sell it in local markets. They also export it to Aus or NZ. Through this they can retain control of their resources. The get the benefit themselves rather than foreign loggin companies, or being squandered by their corrupted government. & simultaneously can maintain their local resources, forests, reeds etc.

Each tree is worth about US$300. This is ten or 20 times more than they would make if they were getting royalty from the foreign logging companies.

Remember to include solution. ie, sustainable development. See bold.

vv strong cultural ties. immediate family considered to be of size 200.Trace back ancestors at least 10 generations.
people that speak one language are blood relatives of extended family

Sustainable development has to include v

basic needs, education, health,

agriculture, security, would be different

to AUS thought of that. Is looking at how

people want to define sustainable

livlihoods & personal peace
