Where have all the webdesigners gone?
Jan. 29th, 2008 10:10 pmI was just wistfully looking at one of my most-favouritest LJ-layout-designing people's lj's, and reminiscing about when I used to spend days and days tweaking pages of code till I had something that was just right. In those days ("") you used to be able to search "Personal website" or "personal blog" or "webdesign" and get a plethora of awesome looking personal websites, fantastically coded, individually hosted. Sites like never-ending.nu, or mirkwood-wench.net or moria news network always used to have such fantastic layouts, and it was always easy to find new sites. But now it seems to have died. Why would that be? Sure, maybe I'm busier now so I don't have time to spend days playing in notepad, but there are other people who are 15-17 now, why aren't they taking up the mantle and decorating the internet with their creativity?
You know what, I blame facebook, myspace, and yes, I suppose, Livejournal. 'Coz, see, in 'my day', all of five years ago, you had to know what you were doing to have a site that looked sa-weet, and nobody was really willing to just do it for you, least of all for free. Sure, livejournal is the best of the three I mentioned because the code is still CODE, it's pretty hard to make your LJ look unique and special without knowing what you're doing.
But Myspace?
With no knowledge at all, you can have a site with music, video, photos, a blog, comments, sparklies! Facebook is little better, although it's even LESS interesting than Myspace. At least Livejournal contains blogs with CONTENT.
Now, when I search those things, basically nothing interesting comes up. Webdesigning companies that will sell you a design for your slice of the internet, but not much else. Even thefanlistings.org doesn't seem to see much use any more.
So maybe I'm just fishing for something to complain about. Or maybe I'm still wishing after a slice of the interwebs of my very own. OR maybe I kind of regret not pursuing the hobby further, because after 5 years at it I'd probably be pretty awesome at it, rather than alright. OR maybe I just don't want to look up NWN2 because I don't want to stumble across spoilers. WHO KNOWS? It's a world of possibilities.
Does anyone have a set of the Sword of Truth books that they want to sell? I really want them. But I don't have New-book kind of money, today. From Temple of the Winds onward is what I need. Yes.
