Does anyone know how to share interwebs between an XP machine and a Vista machine using a LAN cable? I don't remember what type of cable it is, but it has worked in the past.


This is at Gavin's house, and I have successfully set up a network between Gavin's computer (XP Home) and Elbereth (Vista home Premium) before, but I changed something by accident one time and now nothing is working.

I can remember that last time I changed the XP computer to the Workgroup "WORKGROUP" to match Vista, but I can't remember what I did next. Anyway, that approach worked last time, because I could both use the internet and play LAN games.

I also can't find the "help" file that I used last time because Vista is crazy and assumes people don't want to use LAN connections anymore. The internet isn't particuarly helpful because generally, they want me to pay for PDF files(psshhh) or the solutions are things like "Use a LAN cable" "use a router" or the thing with Workgroup... I have already tried re-naming the workgroup for both computers to "WorkgroupA" to see if that would help but it didn't.

Any helpful links or tips would be soo appreciated! :D

In other news I had the most amazing headache this morning. It was so powerful that I feel I should describe it as a profound headache, even though I don't think that quite works. (I should probably say "profoundly painful" but I like saying "Profound headache" more. So... ner.)

If you are using a router, you will need 2 sets of cat5

if you just want to link the 2 computers together you need cross-over

both look exactly the same

As far as networking goes, the best description i have heard is "vista networks itself" so in effect, it takes a ridiculous amount of effort to network vista than it does xp.

I personally find that running network setup wizard works reasonably well, though most of my more computer literate friends hit the roof the second they hear that.

basically, first step is make sure both are plugged into the router, they dont even need to be on the same workgroup, next, you may need to remove/alter your firewalls. Try to connect to the internet on both first, if you cant, try network connection wizard, if after running that you are still getting nowhere, go into command prompt and type "ipconfig", that will then display your system's current ip address, find the ip address of the router (generally whatever yours is, but with a 1, for example if yours is 198.174.1.10 then the router is probably 198.174.1.1.

type that ip address into the bar in any folder (where it would normally say c:\programfiles\dumbshit) and hit enter, if you can find the router then there are no dramas with it getting that far.

But yeah, when i did it at Mahonia with Jasmine's computer it all linked up pretty quick, dont worry too much about network names, it generally doesnt matter too much.
