Nov. 28th, 2007 12:09 am- Smaug - Red Dragon from JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit
- Shun - (from Chinese Mythology, one of the four Dragon Kings who rule the four seas, this is from Ao Shun, Dragon of the North)
- Run - (as above, but West)
- Ryath - (Cool sounding name of a dragon from the Riftwar trilogy)
- Bryagh - (Red wizard Ommadon's dragon in The Flight of Dragons. Also the two fantail goldfish I had when I was 12 were called Gorbash and Smurgle (I didn't know it was meant to be spelt Smrgol (or at least that's what Wikipedia tells me)))
- Ddraig - (I think it is just a Welsh word for dragon)
- Ryu - (Japanese type of dragon, I think? I think it's relevant because Japanese dragons have long flowing, silky manes and are closely associated with water)
- Rong - Vietnamese type of dragon
- Fafnir - Norse dragon guy thing.. dwarf... stuff
- Cael - Irish name of a warrior (also comes from a word that means "slender"
- Caden - little battle (again Irish)
- Cahal - "battle ruler" (Irish)
- Wow, it's a pity "Clancy" isn't a name I like, because it means "Red Warrior"
- Gazini - Zulu name meaning "blood"
- Wigheard - Anglo-Saxon name meaning "War Brave"
- Vigharthur - from above, Icelandic version. Might shorten it to Vighar
- Braith- Welsh name meaning diversely coloured, but mainly red and white
- Moray - Scottish form of "Murray", meaning "Sea Warrior"
- Quan - Chinese meaning "spring water" and also "fist"
- Red Herring - just has to be on the list
I will have to pick one. So far my favourites in terms of sound are:
- Caden
- Cael
- Braith
- Ryu
- Fafnir
- Vighar
- Quan
- Midgard
- Caden
- Vighar
- Moray
- Shun
- Clancy LOL
- Midgard
Maybe I will wait till I put him in the bigger tank tomorrow to see what kind of personality he has.
Also he must be really healthy because he's made spawning bubbles, and according to some websites he will only do that when he's really healthy (makes sense I suppose!) So, joy!
The Nine anatomical resemblances of dragons, from the writings of a Han Dynasty scholar, Wang Fu (China)
The people paint the dragon's shape with a horse's head and a snake's tail. Further, there are expressions as 'three joints' and 'nine resemblances' (of the dragon), to wit: from head to shoulder, from shoulder to breast, from breast to tail. These are the joints; as to the nine resemblances, they are the following: his horns resemble those of a stag, his head that of a camel, his eyes those of a demon, his neck that of a snake, his belly that of a clam (shen, 蜃), his scales those of a carp, his claws those of an eagle, his soles those of a tiger, his ears those of a cow. Upon his head he has a thing like a broad eminence (a big lump), called [chimu] (尺木). If a dragon has no [chimu], he cannot ascend to the sky.
