FOLIO OUTLINE
Meghan Brown
Title of proposed Folio Piece: “The Watcher”

CHARACTERS

MINERVERA
Crown Princess[??] of Teraan, an inland kingdom, the capital of which is found in the hilltop citadel of Taywithe, near the Great Woods and straddling the Tawithe River. It is ruled by a King or Queen, determined by order of birth – the Firstborn is always first in line to the Throne after their Sovereign parent, whether male or female.

Minervera is a headstrong and somewhat flighty girl of around 16. Overconfident and slightly arrogant (which is only to be expected when one is first in line to the Throne), she has a good heart.
Quite able in the “Spirit Song”, the name magic malleable by humans takes in this world. Use of the Spirit Song is becoming painfully uncommon in general, though it still occurs often enough in those of high blood. It is the ability to seek things with the mind, and also to manipulate things outside of one’s body without touching them. Because of this Minervera has even less freedom in marriage – not only must she wed diplomatically, she must be coupled with another with ability to call on the Spirit Song in order to maintain the presence of the ability.
Foolishly the girl lets herself develop strong feelings for a lowly Stablehand named Thalion, who is of common blood and a foreigner.

THE WATCHER
“Neutrality”
The Watcher, the quieter and presumably more ancient of the two ‘gods’ (though they are never referred to as such because the people are unaware of their existence), he takes on the form of a Great Black Wolf with intensely burning yellow eyes when he must take corporeal shape, and he embodies everything that is the wilds – Neutrality is his forte. The Greater Beasts, such as the Waithe-wolves, are aware of “He”, and acknowledge him as a great force of the Hunt or the Long Cold (winter) rather than anything a human would think of as a god.
Commonly enjoys to orchestrate great storms, both on land and sea.

He does not necessarily revel in the inevitable destruction of Minervera’s fragile human mind, and tries to assist her in maintaining her sanity.
Does not think or value things like a human does, and is very much like the Waithe-wolves he resembles in mind.

The Watcher involves himself in the battle of wills between himself and Sianah as he sees it a game. He plays for much the same reason a wolf will play with something - for the sake of a detached curiosity. He is not concerned with the outcome, or the effects, simply in the action. Unlike Sianah, who wants to win, and is obsessed with "The Game". The Watcher is in many ways like a sentient Wolf, and so his actions and thoughts are often confusing to those few made privy to them.

SIANAH
“Chaos”
Sianah, more willing to meddle in the lives of her creations than the Watcher, is also far more human than he. Acts of incredible compassion or incredible cruelty come equally and randomly from her, as she changes with the winds, or more frequently, sometimes. The embodiment of chaos, she cares for nothing – even herself. At most times she cares not for Minervera nor any living thing – she sees, rightly, that she can just re-create what she destroys, and also thinks, having created, she has the right to destroy.
She is largely responsible for humanity, and solely responsible for Dragons [creatures that embody chaos].

THALION
Able stable-hand from the plains-kingdom to the east [Arronath]

THE WANDERER ( STAG)
Little is known about him, though what is known is hardly of any help – a deeply antisocial traveller seen most often in the Great Wood, although he has also been sighted on the Plains of Arronath.
Superstition frames him as a man not human – a shape-changer of strange powers. This is not true; he is a human, though he shares none of their petty fancies.
It is thought that even he does not remember his human birth-name, and that the Waithe-wolves gave him both his title and his common name.
Legend has it that he is called “Stag” because this was the first beast he slew – a great stag with colossal antlers and hooves as sharp as razors, he killed with only a blunt flint-knife, or so they say. The Waithe-wolves, known to watch battles between human hunters and large quarry, are said to have lifted the great body of the stag from Stag (it had fallen on him after he stabbed it in the belly from beneath it) and healed the one gash the stag’s hooves had inflicted on the young man’s right upper arm with their strange Wolf-magic. The legend says that he then stayed with the Waithe-Wolves, choosing their company and ways over that of people. It says that on his 25th summer he left the Waithe-Wolves to seek out one of the Great Dragons, for reasons unknown to even the boldest of gossipers. It is said, however, that he somehow earned a “friendship” from the Great Dragon, and as a symbol of it was awarded a scale, now at all times worn on a thong of stag-leather about the man’s neck.

SETTING
Medieval fantasy- Constructed world – mainly the kingdom of Teraan

PLOT/STORYLINE/SITUATION
The Watcher and Sianah, two all-powerful creator-gods, fight for control over the mind of Minervera, the central piece in their “game”, in which the two great forces battle for power. Minervera struggles to maintain control over her mind, but cannot withstand the power of gods she never even knew existed. The story follows her fall into their power, and the effects of this.

SUB-PLOT/S
The love of Thalion and Minervera
The stirring of the wilds, observed by the Wanderer (Stag)
POINT OF VIEW

Third person omniscient. At times is the voice of The Watcher, eg. At the beginning of chapters

MOOD OR ATMOSPHERE
Sinister, the building of tension towards a great and terrible climax. As we see through the story of Stag, all the world readies as if for a great and apocalyptic battle – the very air becomes crisp with anticipation.

INTENTIONS/GOALS/AIMS
None : simply to tell a story. Hopefully one significantly different to other works, as the main character is not intended to ‘win’.

OTHER CONCERNS
Length. Must find a way to keep the plot potent, but long enough for readers to develop a closeness to the characters. Also must end.

Cliché – Try terribly hard to avoid cliché, or other similarly horrid things like the “Mary Sue” type of heroine – either too physically/mentally weak or too physically/mentally strong. Must try to paint Minervera as a true person – with strengths and flaws fairly balanced.
Which I've posted if anyone is interested. With editingness what has happened due to the prompting of [livejournal.com profile] ummyep. Any cricicism [especially before monday] is, as always... highly appreciated :)

Work caused wrath today, due to the utter lack of Work Ethic displayed by one of my co-workers. She does this every week, too, it's not a one-of - she called in today, today, not yesterday, not within the week sometime to give us some warning, but today, to say she couldn't be in till 5. This isn't unusual from her, so I didn't really care. Tash and I are used to working by ourselves all morning until 4 - what's one more hour going to do? [By the way, Saturday is the busyest day of the week - 2 people is woefully understaffed] Then, at about quarter to 5, she calls again and says "Oh. I'm in Freo! I guess I can't make it then." It was only after my begging her to come because we were really busy that she bothered to come. I didn't realise till after that, had she not decided to drag herself to work, either myself or Tash would have had to close.
I just can't stand inconsiderate, lazy, *chews arm* It makes me so angreh.
*Simmers* but it's in the past now. She did make it to work... at 7pm. SEVEN PM!!
But I'm not talking about that anymore.

I'm quite looking forward to doing more of The Watcher, though I think I'll be changing almost everything. For one thing, Stag is going to be a major character, and I invented him yesterday or so.

Oh, I had a funny dream last night about HP book #6. I got a copy of it, which was a first print, joy, and for some reason all first prints had "to (your name here)" printed in the copyright info. My name wasn't in my copy, so I sent it back, and then I got another one, with my name in it, but it wasn't a first print. It made me very angry, and I refused to start reading the book until I had my copy.
It was a strange dream.
I think this means I'm beginning to eagerly anticipate the next book. I can't wait! *squees* And I will get a first print.. because my OTP is 1st print and I'm getting it from the same store... Yay. But I think this time I might buy two copies, or just not let anyone read my book, not even my family, because my OTP got a bit brutalised by, addmittedly, accidents [involving dropping... on concrete *weeps*], but brutalised none the less. It made my heart hurt.
Of course, it wouldn't be nearly as bad as something bad happening to my LOTR/Hobbit precious editions... that would result in fiery retribution and a great deal of death. But let's not think about such dark things.

Oh! and Aragorn was in my dream last night too. I remember him making some crack about being old, and then he gave me his old boots... and then he was wearing Doc. Martens like my own. This confused me to no end... Because Aragorn doesn't wear Docs... Then I woke up. We were running from something. And I think Aragorn had a gun.
Wrong. So so wrong. stupid subconcious... Aragorn with a gun... like Aragorn needs a gun...
[Aragorn rocks!!] Worship.

Goodnightmorning.

Younger cousins and yeah, I did mean to leave it with them. I've been getting the books as they come out with the shinystar!covers and the books cost a fair bit in India, so mum decided to buy them all on sale and then leave them there as we came back. So now I just haev to wait for the movies to come out before getting my copy of GoF adn OotP etc. I'll probably still buy HBP as it comes out though. or something. but dammit I want to have my own copy on July 16th!
